Scientology Myths - what is fact? what is fiction?
chapter: Detox

Q: What is the Purification Rundown?

The Purification Rundown is a carefully designed combination of exercise, vitamins, nutrition and sauna use which dislodges drug residues and other toxins from the fatty tissues so that these substances can then be eliminated from the body. While the Purification Rundown rids one of the biochemical residues that reactivate past drug experience, it is but the first step to a full resolution to the spiritual devastation caused by drug, medicine and alcohol abuse.

Neither toxic pollution nor drug abuse were of major concern in 1950 when L. Ron Hubbard released his self-help bestseller Dianetics. By the 1960s, however, the frightful specter of both had arrived and Mr. Hubbard’s research showed that a person who had been heavily on drugs was not able to make spiritual gains from auditing. This condition had not been encountered earlier in his researches, as drugs had not yet encroached so deeply into society. But it became more and more prevalent and required a solution, as drugs now represented an increasingly serious block to auditing progress.

The way a being perceives much of existence is via the sensory channels of the body. The body is a communications center for the being, with the brain acting as a switchboard for translating thought into action. The biochemical actions of drugs alter the normal operations of this pattern, often with harmful or even disastrous consequences.

L. Ron Hubbard researched this barrier to spiritual freedom long before it was recognized by others as the huge social concern it is today. His work yielded a truly effective handling for the adverse biochemical effects of drugs and other toxins.

He made the discovery that residues from drugs and other toxins lodge in the fatty tissues of the body and stay there, even years after they have been ingested, and that these residues can continue to affect the individual adversely long after the effect of the drug has apparently worn off. Such deposits have been known to cause lessened perception, tiredness, confused thinking and a host of other symptoms – all of which are counter to what is being achieved through auditing. Documented cases show that an individual may re-experience the effects of LSD years after having taken the drug.

Realizing that this biochemical factor had to be handled before any lasting spiritual gain could be made through auditing, L. Ron Hubbard devised what independent researchers acknowledge as the safest, most effective – and only – detoxification program of its kind: the Purification Rundown.

In Scientology, a rundown designates a series of related actions which culminate in a specific end result. Developed solely to handle the biochemical barrier to spiritual gain, the Purification Rundown is a carefully designed combination of exercise, vitamins, nutrition and sauna use which dislodges drug residues and other toxins from the fatty tissues so that these substances can then be eliminated from the body. A person undergoing this program is closely monitored by specially trained personnel in liaison with medical doctors to ensure that each aspect of the program is administered correctly and the desired benefits are attained.

The program can take several weeks. As well as spending time in saunas, participants are required to do light exercise including calisthenics, treadmills, and other similar activities.

The program is not a weight loss program, and a medical doctor's permission is required in advance to start the program. Daily reports monitor the person's condition and progress through the program. The program consists of a course of doses of vitamins (niacin in particular), long periods in a sauna, exercise, and consumption of a blend of vegetable oils. A normal, healthy menu is maintained throughout the procedure. Doses of vitamins are monitored, and are adjusted during the course of the rundown.

The theory is that toxins, drugs, and radioactive particles are stored in body fat, which are released through the exchange of fats (thus the oil consumption) and exercise, and then finally released via perspiration and other normal mechanisms such as body waste. The Purification Rundown requires its participants to ingest the following at regular intervals:

  • Niacin
  • Oils, to replace the oils that are sweated out in the sauna.
  • "CalMag" a drink consisting of calcium, magnesium water and cider vinegar.
  • Multi-vitamins, Vitamins A, B1, Bcomplex, C, D, E, and multi-minerals
  • Plenty of water, salt and potassium, used to replace the fluids and minerals lost in the sauna

Once the person has been freed from the harmful effects of these drug residues and other toxins, he is in a far better position to improve as a spiritual being, to which ten thousands of people have attested.
